Domestic Violence And A Social Health Problem Essay

Domestic violence happens in every socio-economic level and to people from all walks of life. It is also the single largest cause of violence in United States (Sherman, Schmidt, Rogan,1992). Despite this alarming reality, a general response to domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) by the public is in line with what is consider unacceptable and with what the law considers legally wrong. It should come as no surprise that the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention currently classifies IPV and DV as a social health problem (CDC, 2014). Data collected at the national level provide reports that show 1 in 5 women being victims of severe physical violence during their lifetime (NISVS, 2010). We must ask ourselves if enough is being done to prevent this. From a historical point, men on woman violence has always stood out. Based on the disparity of cases reported, male inflicted violence on females is much higher and prevalent. When the perpetrators of DV, and IPV are predominately males, we can no longer dismissed this issue as a cultural, or psychological lapse in judgment. Currently the state of California requires all domestic violence offenders to take court order classes as a form of reprimand and in part to educate offenders. It is important to understand that a justice system intervention can sometimes fall short and failed to address the root of the problem.
